REDISCOVERED:
A REVIEW OF CHARLES HAANEL’S
“THE MASTER KEY SYSTEM”
Claiming one has the solution for every human problem would appear to be
the ultimate in exaggerated statements. But for anyone who reads and
follows the instructions given by Charles Haanel in “The Master Key
System,” it would be difficult to refute or discount the powerful method
of finding solutions that are described.
The book was written in 1912 and by 1933 it had sold over 200,000 copies.
The book was banned by the Church in 1933 and has remained hidden until
its recent “rediscovery.” The banning of the book may have related to Mr.
Haanel’s proposition that the mind of any individual is part of and has
the same potential power as the Universal Mind or the “mind” of the
“Creator.” But when viewed closely, Mr. Haanel’s propositions can very
well be described as being consistent with and supportive of the key
concepts of Christianity and other religions.
The book is in the form of 24 weekly lectures that are easy to follow
considering the literally mind altering phases it takes you through. After
reading each lecture, the reader is to practice the lesson given for the
entire week before reading the next lesson. Although some of the lessons
may be able to be doubled up, the direction given to read one a week is
definitely advisable. The techniques given are all done in order to open
up the awesome power that is locked up in each of our minds. And as Mr.
Haanel indicated in his book, you cannot change negative thoughts you have
been having for 20 or 30 years in 15 to 20 minutes.
The best way to get a sense of the power disclosed by Mr. Haanel is to
recount some of the points in his lessons from the book: “The Master Key
is based on absolute scientific truth and will unfold the possibilities
that lie dormant in the individual, and teach how they may be brought into
powerful action, to increase the person’s effective capacity, bringing
added energy, discernment, vigor and mental elasticity. The student who
gains an understanding of the mental laws which are unfolded will come
into the possession of an ability to secure results hitherto undreamed of,
and which has rewards hardly to be expressed in words.”
As Mr. Haanel describes, it is important to realize that you are part of
the most powerful force that exists: “When you begin to perceive that the
essence of the Universal is within yourself – it is you – you begin to do
things; you begin to feel your power; it is the fuel which fires the
imagination; which lights the torch of inspiration; which gives vitality
to thought; which enables you to connect with all the invisible forces of
the Universe. It is this power which will enable you to plan fearlessly,
to execute masterfully.”
There are two key parts to this internal discovery as Mr. Haanel states:
“All mental discovery and attainment are the result of desire plus
concentration; desire is the strongest mode of action; the more persistent
the desire, the more authoritative the revelation. Desire added to
concentration will wrench any secret from nature.”
In the “Master Key System,” it is vitally important for the student to
develop skills at concentration. Mr. Haanel devotes most of his lessons to
teaching students how to maximize concentration and that includes having a
quiet place to let your mind work: “Inspiration is from within. The
Silence is necessary, the senses must be stilled, the muscles relaxed,
repose cultivated. When you have thus come into possession of a sense of
poise and power you will be ready to receive the information or
inspiration or wisdom which may be necessary for the development of your
purpose.”
Mr. Haanel made interesting, and I believe prophetic, comparisons between
the discoveries and advancements in the material or physical sciences over
the last 100 – 170 years and the discoveries and advancements in the
spiritual or mental sciences in the near future. As an illustration, Mr.
Haanel compared a relatively new (in 1912) physical discovery of the
properties of electricity. “There is no more Electricity in the world
today than there was fifty years ago, but until someone recognized the law
by which it could be made of service, we received no benefit; now that the
law is understood, practically the whole world is lit by it. So with the
law of Abundance [the unlimited potential of the human mind]; it is only
those who recognize the law and place themselves in harmony with it, who
share in its benefits.”
Although banned by the Catholic Church in 1933, some of the most powerful
proof on the “Truthfulness” of what is described in “The Master Key
System” comes from a quote from Jesus in Mark 11:24, as was restated in
Mr. Hansel’s book: “What things so ever ye desire when ye pray, believe
that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.” This statement is the
primary principle in the book. According to Mr. Haanel, in order for an
individual to find an answer to any problem, they need to realize their
mind is joined with the Universal Mind of the Creator. When an individual
has that realization and visualizes his desired result – that result will
come to that individual.
We have been given this precious gift by the Creator, but have been unable
to use it as was intended. As has been documented by research, humans are
not using most of their brain. Why would we have such potential brain
power if the Creator did not intend for its use. “The recognition of the
marvelous power which is possessed by the mind under proper conditions and
the fact that this power can be utilized, directed, and made available for
the solution of every human problem is of transcendental importance.”
“The whole world is on the eve of a new consciousness, a new power, and a
new realization within the self.” After reading “The Master Key System,”
it is difficult to counter this assertion. The evidence is compelling.
With the possibility of unlocking the unlimited power of the mind, these
lessons could be the most important any person has ever taken.
